Comparing workout intensity

Which workouts achieve better results? With this template, you can calculate the intensity of a certain workout by using the Banister formula. To do so, you should measure both your resting and maximum heart rates. You will receive a value that reveals how effective different workouts are, letting you compare them with one another.

Workout 1

Workout 2

This way, you can measure, for example, whether it is more intense to run for half an hour with a heart rate of 130 beats per minute, or 20 minutes with a heart rate of 150 beats per minute. If you have a resting heart rate of 60 and a maximum rate of 190 beats, the measurement will appear as follows:

Workout intensity = duration * (average heart rate – resting heart rate) / (maximum heart rate – resting heart rate):

1. Workout : 30 * (130 - 60) / (190 - 60) = 16,15 (workout intensity)
2. Workout : 20 * (150 - 60) / (190 - 60) = 13,85 (workout intensity)

This means that workout 1 is more intense.
